Herbal energetics is the key to understanding how to match herbs to people.

Get beyond "this-for-that" herbalism into a more nuanced, individualized approach.

Have you ever researched an herb, tried it, and found it "didn't work"? What's going on?

Herbs are not one-size-fits-all.

Discover the system herbalists have used through history and across the world to make sure they're getting the right herb for the specific person they're working with. Without this system, herbal application is basically just guessing the answer on a multiple-choice test.

Don't guess! Be sure.

This course will show you how.

What does "energetics" mean?

Energetics is a weird word (honestly, i think it sounds a little goofy and i wish we'd pick a new one, but this is the one that is standard so i think we're stuck with it 🙃 ) that basically means:

what type of action (function) do herbs have

and

what kind of presentation do illnesses have

and

how do we successfully match the right herbal action to the right dis-ease presentation?

A very easy example is that fevers are hot - they are presentations of heat. Another example is a red swollen sprained ankle - hot and in that case damp.

You can feel both of these yourself - you feel the swolleness of the extra fluid in the sprained area, and you feel the heat from the inflammation. You don't have to google it - you can feel it right with your hand just by touching the sprained ankle.

An herbal example is Cayenne - it's hot too! You don't have to look it up in a book, you know it on your tongue.

The study of energetics is learning each of the types of action/presentation, learning to figure it out for yourself, and then learning how to take the right herbal action to counter the things that you see out of balance. For example, in a case of edema (damp - too much fluid stuck in one place), that you need to get fluid moving again, and what types of herbs can do that.

Some situations are very obvious: edema is obviously a bunch of fluid hanging around. Some situations are a little less obvious, but when you learn to think about the body - and about the herbs - in this manner, it becomes easier to see over time.

This type of observational science is how our ancestors were able to manage illness and dis-ease before we had microscopes and laboratories. They weren't guessing - they were using science! We can develop those observational skills too, and apply them in an organized and systematic manner, so that the choices we make will be successful in our journey towards better, more resilient health.

Base YOUR herbal practice on the system our ancestors built.

What you'll learn:

The practice of health care throughout history was not based on guessing or getting lucky. There is a system built on logic, and when you learn it, suddenly everything makes a lot more sense!

You’ll learn how to:

  • identify the constitution - the baseline state - of the person you're working with
  • identify the state of their current health issues
  • confidently choose the appropriate herbal actions
  • identify exactly the right herbs for what you're working on

Certificate Information

You will receive a certificate for the successful completion of this course.

This course has 30 credit hours.

This represents the actual time of video instruction and live Q&A, as well as the time allocated for your capstone assignment, quizzes, and other assignments & activities required for completion of the course.

It is reasonable to plan about twice that much time to complete the work: this is because most students like to watch the videos more than once, review their notes, and many students complete more than the required activities. You might also enjoy joining a study group in our Student Community, and you might choose to work on extra activities together as a group to help you internalize all that you've learned.

Regardless of how long it takes you, there is never any pressure! You have access to this material for life, and in fact, when we add updates and new materials, you receive it all for free, automatically!

If new material is added after you have received your certificate, we are happy to send you a new updated certificate to document the additional time when you complete the new material.

Your Teachers

Two heads are better than one!

Katja & Ryn
Katja & Ryn

Katja & Ryn almost always teach together. They each have particular talents and areas of interest, and their perspectives on certain issues are quite different! Together, they convey a fuller picture of the realities of herbal theory & practice than either one could do alone.

Katja is an herbalist and teacher working to help people rebuild their relationships with their bodies and their own ability to heal. She’s been in practice for nearly 25 years, but it all began with a desire to make her own “fancy tea” at home instead of paying high prices for imported blends at specialty stores. She’s kept that do-it-yourself ethic close to her heart.

Ryn has been a practicing herbalist since 2010. He came to herbalism by way of martial arts, where his first experiences with herbs were focused on getting back into the game and becoming more flexible, adaptable, and resilient. Passing that experience on to others is what keeps him motivated every day.

Together, Katja and Ryn teach everyone from children to elders, as well as pharmacy students from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Northeastern University School of Pharmacy, where they both serve as associate faculty. Ryn and Katja are also the creators of the weekly Holistic Herbalism Podcast.
